Peg Warrick spoke at the September 13, 2022 meeting about her work at Literacy Rochester. They have many ongoing programs that help increase the language skills and digital literacy of people in our area. Thanks to the help of volunteers and groups like Rush-Henrietta Rotary they are able to teach new students and make a huge positive impact on our community.

Literacy Rochester update 9/13/22 meeting

At Literacy Rochester our success is driven by three things:

1) Courage of our STUDENTS

2) Dedication of our VOLUNTEERS

3) Support of our COMMUNITY

Thank you for being part of our supportive community!  I appreciate being able to update you on all the programs at Literacy Rochester and for the ongoing generous support the Rush-Henrietta Rotary club has provided for us.  And, luckily for us, you asked me to speak in the middle of our annual raffle and everyone purchased tickets!  I tried to pick winners for you all.

As I discussed, we have Reading, Math and English programs that serve 250-280 students each year.  75% of those students increase their language skills to a 6th grade level or above within one year.

With our Digital Literacy program, we have volunteers with LR computers in 11 locations around Monroe County and serve 1500 people each year, helping them complete new computer tasks that range from applying for benefits or a new job, to setting up their first email address so they can receive pictures from a grandchild.

Since we talked in September, Literacy Rochester has signed up about 30 Ukrainian refugees and has connected with a Ukrainian church in Irondequoit to recruit both new students and new tutors.

We could not do this without the support of individuals and groups like Rush-Henrietta Rotary.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Thank you very much.
